Making the て-form
The sound changes below apply to Group I only, so the group has to be settled first. If you cannot yet tell Group I from Group II on sight, read 詳説 · Step one is the group further down this page before this table — it decides the group from the ます-form you already have.
| Group | Ending | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 godan | う · つ · る | → って | 買う→買って · 待つ→待って · 取る→取って |
| む · ぶ · ぬ | → んで | 飲む→飲んで · 遊ぶ→遊んで · 死ぬ→死んで | |
| く | → いて | 書く→書いて | |
| ぐ | → いで | 泳ぐ→泳いで | |
| す | → して | 話す→話して | |
| 2 ichidan | — | drop る + て | 食べる→食べて · 見る→見て |
| 3 irreg. | — | — | する→して ·来る→来て(きて) |
Exception:行く→行って, not 行いて.

1. 〜てください — request / instruction
ちょっと待ってください。 / 住所を書いてください。Softer: 〜ていただけませんか (L26). This form is fine for instructions but can sound directive to a superior.

詳説 In depth — grammar notes ›
The て-form is the hub, not one more ending
Almost everything ahead of you attaches to the て-form: 〜てください and 〜ています here, 〜てもいいです ·〜てはいけません in L15, 〜て、〜て ·〜てから in L16, 〜てあげます in L24, 〜てしまいます, 〜ておきます, 〜ています as a habit in L28. The plain past is the same shape with て→た (L19), so making the て-form is also how you make 買った, 飲んだ and 書いた.
This is why L14 is the lesson people stall on: it is not a new pattern, it is the gate to twenty of them. Spend the time here.
Step one is the group, and you can decide it from the ます-form
The sound change below applies to Group I only. Group II never changes sound, so getting the group wrong is what produces 借って ✕ and 起いて ✕. At this point in the book you have the verb as 〜ます, so decide from the kana immediately before ます.
| Step | Ask | Then |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Is it します or 来ます? | III — there are only these two. |
| 2 | Is the kana before ます an e-sound? (え·け·せ·て·ね·へ·め·れ·げ·ぜ·で·べ·ぺ) | II, with no exceptions. |
| 3 | It is an i-sound. Is the verb one of the i-row Group II verbs? | II — see the list below. |
| 4 | Otherwise | I — the default, and where most verbs land. |
| Group II because the stem is e-row | 食べます · 教えます · 開けます · 閉めます · 見せます · 止めます · 始めます |
| Group II although the stem is i-row | います · 見ます · 起きます · 借ります · 浴びます · 降ります (get off) · 着ます (wear) · 落ちます · 足ります · 過ぎます · 信じます · できます |
| Group I — every other i-row stem | 書きます · 飲みます · 話します · 買います · 待ちます · 帰ります |
Step 3 is a list you build, not one you finish. These are the i-row Group II verbs in the two books, but you will meet more, and nothing about the kana tells you — 起きます and 書きます both end in き. Learn each new verb with its group the day you meet it, exactly as BASE says.
The pair that catches everyone: 行きます is Group I (行って), 生きます is Group II (生きて). Same sound, different group, opposite て-form.
帰ります and 切ります look like the middle row and are not — they are Group I, so 帰って ·切って. That trap list is in BASE; the seven you meet first are 帰る · 入る · 走る · 切る · 知る · 要る · 減る.
The whole difficulty of this lesson is in the middle row. Learn those verbs with their group the day you meet them and the rest of L14 is mechanical.
Making the て-form
Work from the ます-form: drop ます, then change what is left according to the group.
| Group | ます-stem ends in | Change | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
One exception in the whole system: 行きます→行って, not 行いて. It is a Group I verb ending in き that behaves as if it ended in り. Everything else on the き row is regular.
Memory aid
| Sound | Why it groups | Result |
|---|---|---|
| い · ち · り | all collapse into a glottal stop | っ + て |
| み · び · に | all nasal | ん + で (the ん voices the て) |
| き · ぎ | both drop to い | いて / いで (ぎ voices it) |
| し | already a し | して — nothing to change |
The voicing is not arbitrary: ん and ぎ carry voice into the ending, which is why you get んで and いで rather than んて and いて. Say them out loud once and you will not mix them up again.
The group is doing the work — same stem, different answer
| ます-form | Group | て-form | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 借ります | II | 借りて | drop ます, add て — no sound change |
| 帰ります | I | 帰って | り → って |
| 起きます | II | 起きて | drop ます, add て |
| 聞きます | I | 聞いて | き → いて |
These four are the whole lesson in miniature. If you can produce them without looking, you have it.
1. 〜てください — request and instruction
て-form + ください. It is the everyday way to ask for an action, and it is also how instructions are given, which is exactly the problem with it.
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| ちょっと待ってください | Please wait a moment. |
| ここに住所を書いてください | Please write your address here. |
| もう一度言ってください | Please say that once more. |
| ゆっくり話してください | Please speak slowly. |
〜てください is a soft instruction, not the polite ceiling. To a teacher, a client or anyone above you it can land as an order — use 〜ていただけませんか (L26) there. The negative, "please don't", is not built from this form at all: it is 〜ないでください (L17).
2. 〜ましょうか — offering to do it yourself
Not the て-form: this one is ます-stem + ましょうか. It offers your action for someone else's benefit.
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 荷物を持ちましょうか | Shall I carry your bag? |
| 手伝いましょうか | Shall I help? |
| 窓を開けましょうか | Shall I open the window? |
| ええ、お願いします。/ いいえ、けっこうです。 | Yes please. / No, thank you. |
| Form | Who acts | Reads as |
|---|---|---|
| 〜てください | the listener | do this — a request or an instruction |
| 〜ましょうか | you | shall I? — an offer |
| 〜ましょう (L6) | both of you | let's |
| 〜ませんか (L6) | both of you | won't you? — an invitation, leaves room to decline |
Offering to do something for someone with 〜てください is the commonest register slip of this lesson. 持ってください hands the person a job; 持ちましょうか offers to take one off them.
3. 〜ています — the action is under way
て-form + います. Right now, at the moment of speaking, the action is in progress.
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| ミラーさんは今電話をかけています | Mr Miller is on the phone right now. |
| 雨が降っています | It's raining. |
| 子どもたちは公園で遊んでいます | The children are playing in the park. |
| 何をしていますか | What are you doing? |
| Sentence | What it says |
|---|---|
| 今、雨が降っています | it is raining as we speak |
| 明日雨が降ります | it will rain tomorrow |
| 毎日6時に起きます | I get up at six every day — a habit, and plain ます is right |
Non-past ます already covers the future and habits, so do not reach for ています just because a sentence is about a routine. 毎朝ジョギングをします is correct Japanese. ています is for the action being under way now; from L28 it also frames a habit as a practice you are currently keeping up, which is a different job again.
ています has two more uses ahead: a resulting state in L15 (結婚しています ·知っています ·住んでいます — for the state *now*, ています is the only option), and long-running habit in L28.
4. Directions — the て-form's first real workout
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| まっすぐ行ってください | Go straight on. |
| あの信号を右へ曲がってください | Turn right at that traffic light. |
| 次の角を左へ曲がってください | Turn left at the next corner. |
| ここで止めてください | Stop here, please. |
東京ホテルまでお願いします。
はい、わかりました。
あの信号を右へ曲がってください。
ここで止めてください。
曲がります takes two particles at once — 角を右へ曲がります: を for the landmark you turn at, へ for the direction. The fuller direction vocabulary is L23.
Error table
| ✕ | ○ | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 借って | 借りて | 借ります is Group II — drop ます, add て |
| 起いて | 起きて | 起きます is Group II too; the き sound change is Group I only |
| 帰りて | 帰って | 帰ります looks Group II but is Group I |
| 行いて | 行って | the one exception in the whole table |
| 待ちてください | 待ってください | ち → って before ください |
| 書くください | 書いてください | ください takes the て-form, never the dictionary |
| 荷物を持ってください(=offering to carry it) | 荷物を持ちましょうか | てください gives an instruction; ましょうか offers |
| 今、電話をかけます(=right now) | 今、電話をかけています | an action under way takes ています |
