Lesson 49 — 尊敬語そんけいご(honorific)

BOOK II · 初級 II みんなの日本語 · Mini no Nihongo

L49 · 尊敬語 honorific

Name Date

REF尊敬語そんけいご(honorific)

尊敬語そんけいごraises theother person. Use it about your superior, customer, or guest — never about yourself or your own in-group.

1. Passive form used as honorific

Identical in shape to the L37 passive, but respectful.

PlainHonorific

/ The mildest honorific level — safe and easy, but weaker than the forms below.

2. お + ます-stem + になります

Chinese-origin nouns: ご + noun + になります —

Does not work with one-mora stems: 見みる · 寝ねる · いる ·来くる→ use the special verbs instead.

Also never combine with a special verb: お召めし上あがりになります is over-honorific (though widely heard).

3. Special honorific verbs

PlainHonorific

Irregular ます-forms — all five drop to い:

いらっしゃいます · おっしゃいます · なさいます · くださいます · ございます

4. Honorific requests: お + ます-stem + ください

Chinese-origin nouns:

お vs ご:お goes with native-Japanese stems (お待まち · お帰かえり), ご with Chinese-origin nouns (ご利用りよう· ご注意ちゅうい· ご説明せつめい). A few take either: お電話でんわ· ご返事へんじ.

詳説 In depth — grammar notes

尊敬語そんけいご — raising the other person

Honorific language lifts the person you are talking about: a customer, a client, your boss, a stranger. Never use it about yourself or about your own group when speaking to outsiders — that is what 謙譲語けんじょうご (L50) is for.

Three ways to build it, from lightest to heaviest.

1. Passive form as honorific

The shape is identical to the passive (L37); only context separates them.

PlainHonorific
JapaneseEnglish
The manager has already left.
It was Prof. Yamada who wrote this book.

This is the mildest honorific — common in offices and in writing. Because it collides with the passive, use it where the meaning is obvious.

2. お + ます-stem + になります

PlainHonorific

Two exclusions. Single-syllable stems (, , ) do not take this pattern — use the special verbs. And する-verbs take ご + noun + になります: , .

3. Special honorific verbs

Plain尊敬語Notes
one word for all three
negative:
L41

Five of these are irregular in the ます-form — they end in います, not ります: , , , , . ✕.

JapaneseEnglish
The professor is in his office now.
What will you have?
Have you seen this article?
What did the manager say?
Do you know Mr Yamada?

4. Honorific requests: お + ます-stem + ください

JapaneseEnglish
Please wait here.
Please come in.
Please help yourself.
Please mind the escalator.

This is the voice of announcements and shop staff. It is more polite than 〜てください and completely standard in service situations.

5. Honorific nouns, adjectives and adverbs

PlainPolite

お名前なまえは何なんとおっしゃいますか。

ミラーと申もうします。

コーヒーはいかがですか。

ありがとうございます。いただきます。

お goes on native Japanese words, ご on Chinese-origin compounds: · · (an exception worth memorising).
