Key vocabulary
詳説 In depth — grammar notes ›
1. 〜そうです — hearsay (伝聞)
You are repeating information without taking responsibility for it. Attach そうです to the plain form, whatever it is — past, negative, noun, adjective.
| Type | Before そうです | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | plain | 雨が降るそうです · 来なかったそうです |
| い-adj | plain | 新しい店は安いそうです |
| な-adj | + だ | あの人は元気だそうです |
| noun | + だ | あしたは雨だそうです |
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 天気予報によると、あしたは雪だそうです | According to the forecast, it'll snow tomorrow. |
| 山田さんは来月結婚するそうです | I hear Mr Yamada is getting married next month. |
| あの映画はおもしろかったそうです | They say that film was good. |
Hearsay そうです has no other forms. そうでした ✕ · そうじゃありません ✕ — put the tense and the negative inside the quoted part: 降らなかったそうです.
Source marker: 〜によると
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| ニュースによると、地震があったそうです | According to the news, there was an earthquake. |
| 山田さんの話によると、部長は入院したそうです | From what Mr Yamada says, the boss has been hospitalised. |
Pairs to keep: 〜によると 〜そうです (hearsay) · 〜と言っていました (L33, a specific person's words) · 〜ということです (formal announcements).
2. ⚠ L43 そう vs L47 そう — the exam trap
| appearance (L43) | hearsay (this lesson) | |
|---|---|---|
| attaches to | stem | plain form |
| い-adj | おいしそうです — looks tasty | おいしいそうです — I hear it's tasty |
| verb | 降りそうです — looks about to rain | 降るそうです — I hear it'll rain |
| な-adj | 元気そうです | 元気だそうです |
| noun | ✕ | 雨だそうです |
| modifies a noun | おいしそうなケーキ | ✕ |
| negative | おいしくなさそうです | おいしくないそうです |
One い or one だ decides the meaning. Read the shape before the そう, not the そう itself.
3. 〜ようです — my conclusion from the evidence
ようです is your own judgement based on something you can see, hear, smell or infer. It follows a noun modifier: plain form, な-adjective + な, noun + の.
| Type | Before ようです |
|---|---|
| verb | だれか来たようです |
| い-adj | 熱が高いようです |
| な-adj | + な: 元気なようです |
| noun | + の: 風邪のようです |
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 道が濡れています。雨が降ったようです | The road is wet — it seems it rained. |
| 部屋が暗いです。だれもいないようです | The room is dark; it looks like nobody's in. |
| 熱があります。風邪をひいたようです | I have a fever — seems I've caught a cold. |
みたいです is the casual twin of ようです and attaches like a noun: 雨みたいです · 降ったみたいです. Same meaning, spoken register.
4. Comparing the guessing forms
| Form | Basis | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜そうです (L43) | how it looks right now | 雨が降りそうです |
| 〜ようです | evidence I have gathered | 雨が降ったようです |
| 〜はずです (L46) | logic from a known fact | 雨が降るはずです |
| 〜でしょう (L32) | general expectation | 雨が降るでしょう |
| 〜かもしれません (L32) | bare possibility | 雨が降るかもしれません |
| 〜そうです (L47) | somebody told me | 雨が降るそうです |
5. Sensory 〜がします
For sensations that arrive on their own — the same "it reaches me" idea as 見えます / 聞こえます (L27).
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 台所からいいにおいがします | There's a nice smell from the kitchen. |
| 変な音がしますね | There's a strange noise, isn't there. |
| このスープは辛い味がします | This soup tastes spicy. |
| なんだか寒気がします | I feel a bit chilly. |

| 降るそうでした | 降ったそうです | tense goes inside the quote |
| 風邪ようです | 風邪のようです | noun + の before ようです |
