Making the potential form

All potential verbs conjugate as Group 2: 書ける → 書けない → 書けた → 書けなかった → 書けて.
Casual ら抜き (食べれる) is common in speech but MNN tests 食べられる.
Particle change: を → が
日本語を話します → 日本語が話せます
The object of a potential verb normally takes が. Other particles (へ・に・で) stay unchanged: 「一人で行けます」

見えます / 聞こえます vs potential

見えます/聞こえます describe things arriving at your senses unbidden. 見られます/聞けます describe anopportunity.
できます — additional uses
駅前に大きいスーパーができました。 (came into being)
食事ができました。 (is ready)
しか +否定 — only / nothing but
100円しかありません。 / ひらがなしか書けません。

しか always pairs with a negative verb, and it replaces は/が/を.
Contrastive は
ワインは飲みますが、ビールは飲みません。
Both contrasted items take は, even when they'd normally take を or が.
