1. 〜たら — if / when (the all-purpose conditional)
Formation: た-form + ら for every word type.
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | 〜たら | 雨が降ったら、行きません |
| い-adj | 〜かったら | 安かったら、買います |
| な-adj | 〜だったら | 暇だったら、手伝ってください |
| noun | 〜だったら | 雨だったら、中止です |
Unlike と (L23), たら can be followed by requests, invitations, intentions and commands. This is the main contrast tested.
Two meanings of たら
| Meaning | Condition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| if (uncertain) | may or may not happen | お金があったら、旅行します |
| when (certain) | will definitely happen | 10時になったら、出かけましょう |
2. もし — signals a hypothetical
もし1億円あったら、何をしたいですか。
もし is optional but flags early that a condition is coming.
3. 〜ても — even if
Formation: て-form + も.
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | 〜ても | 雨が降っても、行きます |
| い-adj | 〜くても | 安くても、買いません |
| な-adj | 〜でも | 便利でも、使いません |
| noun | 〜でも | 日曜日でも、働きます |
Negative: 〜なくても — 安くなくても買います。
4. いくら 〜ても — no matter how much
いくら考えても、わかりません。
いくら高くても、買います。
5. たら vs ても — the contrast
| たら | ても |
|---|---|
| if A, then B follows | even if A, B happens anyway |
| 雨が降ったら、行きません | 雨が降っても、行きます |

Key vocabulary
詳説 In depth — grammar notes ›
たら is just the past form plus ら
There is nothing new to conjugate. Take the plain past — with all its irregularities — and add ら. If you can make the た-form, you can make every conditional in this lesson.
| Type | plain past | conditional | negative conditional |
|---|---|---|---|
| 行きます | 行った | 行ったら | 行かなかったら |
| 飲みます | 飲んだ | 飲んだら | 飲まなかったら |
| 食べます | 食べた | 食べたら | 食べなかったら |
| します | した | したら | しなかったら |
| 安い | 安かった | 安かったら | 安くなかったら |
| 暇な | 暇だった | 暇だったら | 暇じゃなかったら |
| 雨 | 雨だった | 雨だったら | 雨じゃなかったら |
The ら sits on the past form but carries no past meaning. 雨が降ったら is about tomorrow, not yesterday.
Three jobs たら does
| Job | Test | Example |
|---|---|---|
| if — uncertain | may or may not happen | お金があったら、旅行します |
| when — certain | will definitely happen | 10時になったら、出かけましょう |
| upon — discovery | main clause is past & unexpected | うちへ帰ったら、手紙が来ていました |
The third one is easy to miss. With a past main clause, たら stops meaning 'if' entirely and reports what you found when you did something — the outcome was outside your control.
Why たら and not と
The reason to have both is what may follow. と bans anything volitional; たら allows all of it.
| Main clause | 〜と | 〜たら |
|---|---|---|
| automatic result | ○ | ○ |
| request 〜てください | ✕ | ○ |
| invitation 〜ましょう | ✕ | ○ |
| intention 〜つもり ·〜ます | ✕ | ○ |
| permission 〜てもいい | ✕ | ○ |
| command 〜なさい | ✕ | ○ |
| ✕ with と | ○ with たら |
|---|---|
| 駅に着くと、電話してください | 駅に着いたら、電話してください |
| 雨が降ると、行きません | 雨が降ったら、行きません |
もし and the size of the 'if'
もし is optional. It goes at the front and signals early that a hypothetical is coming, which helps the listener parse a long sentence.
| Adverb | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| もし | if, hypothetically | もし1億円あったら、何をしたいですか |
| もしよかったら | softener before an invitation | もしよかったら、いっしょに行きませんか |
| できたら | if it can be managed | できたら、明日までにお願いします |
| 万が一 | in the unlikely event | 万が一遅れたら、連絡します |
〜ても — concession
Built off the て-form, so every て-form irregularity carries over. It says: A happens, and B happens anyway.
| Type | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| verb | 降っても | 降らなくても |
| い-adj | 安くても | 安くなくても |
| な-adj | 便利でも | 便利じゃなくても |
| noun | 日曜日でも | 日曜日じゃなくても |
な-adjectives and nouns use でも, not てmo — they never had a て-form of their own.
たら vs ても — one letter of difference in English, opposite meanings
| 〜たら | 〜ても |
|---|---|
| if A, then B | even if A, still B |
| 雨が降ったら、行きません | 雨が降っても、行きます |
| 安かったら、買います | 安くても、買いません |
| the condition decides the outcome | the condition is irrelevant to the outcome |
Check yourself by flipping the main clause: with たら the two halves agree (cheap → buy), with ても they clash (cheap → don't buy). If your sentence has agreement, ても is the wrong choice.
ても vs 〜が / 〜けど
| Form | Status of A | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜ても | hypothetical or general | 雨が降っても、行きます— even if it rains |
| 〜が ·〜けど | an actual fact right now | 雨が降っていますが、行きます— it's raining, but |
If you can point at it happening, use が/けど. ても keeps the situation in the realm of supposition.
いくら / どんなに /何回〜ても
An adverb of degree in front of ても gives 'no matter how much'. Question words work the same way and give 'no matter what / who / where'.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| いくら〜ても | no matter how much | いくら考えても、わかりません |
| どんなに〜ても | no matter how (emphatic) | どんなに高くても、買います |
| 何回〜ても | no matter how many times | 何回読んでも、わかりません |
| 何を〜ても | no matter what | 何を食べても、おいしいです |
| 誰が〜ても | no matter who | 誰が来ても、会いません |
いくら here is not 'how much (money)' — with ても it is pure degree, and it needs the ても. いくら高いです ✕.
Useful たら set phrases
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜たらどうですか | suggestion | 医者に行ったらどうですか |
| 〜たら、〜てください | instruction with a trigger | 着いたら、電話してください |
| 〜たらいいですか | asking what to do (L26) | どこで買ったらいいですか |
| 〜たらよかった | regret | 早く来たらよかったです |
