詳説 In depth — grammar notes ›
Transitive and intransitive — the split that runs through this lesson
Japanese usually has two verbs where English has one. One says somebody acted on something (transitive, takes を); the other says the thing did it by itself (intransitive, takes が).
| 他動詞 transitive | 自動詞 intransitive | |
|---|---|---|
| particle | を | が |
| who acts | a person | nobody — it just happens |
| example | 窓を開けます | 窓が開きます |
| て+いる means | the action is in progress | the resulting state continues |
This is the whole lesson in one line: 〜ています on a transitive verb = doing it now; 〜ています on an intransitive verb = it is (still) in that state. 窓を開けています = someone is opening the window. 窓が開いています = the window is open.
〜ています — a state that is still true
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 電気がついています | The light is on. |
| 窓が閉まっています | The window is shut. |
| エアコンが壊れています | The air conditioner is broken. |
| 木の枝が折れています | The branch is snapped. |
| かぎがかかっています | It's locked. |
| 道が込んでいます | The road is congested. |
English uses an adjective ("the light is on", "it's broken"); Japanese uses a verb in the て-form plus います. If your English translation is "is + adjective" and the thing did it by itself, reach for an intransitive verb + ています.
The pairs worth memorising
Learn them in pairs and the particle takes care of itself.
| Transitive を | Intransitive が | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 開けます | 開きます | open |
| 閉めます | 閉まります | close |
| つけます | つきます | switch on / come on |
| 消します | 消えます | turn off / go out |
| 入れます | 入ります | put in / go in |
| 出します | 出ます | take out / come out |
| 壊します | 壊れます | break |
| 割ります | 割れます | smash / shatter |
| 落とします | 落ちます | drop / fall |
| 止めます | 止まります | stop something / stop |
| 始めます | 始まります | begin something / begin |
| 並べます | 並びます | line up something / queue |
| 集めます | 集まります | gather things / gather |
Watch the readings, not just the kanji: 入れます vs 入ります, 消します vs 消えます. Same character, different verb.
Intransitive-only, no pair needed
〜てしまいました — two very different feelings
The same form does "finished it off" and "oh no". Word choice around it tells you which.
| Sense | Signal words | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| completion | 全部, もう, すっかり | 宿題は全部やってしまいました | I've finished all the homework. |
| regret | うっかり, 忘れて, 落として | パスポートをなくしてしまいました | I've gone and lost my passport. |
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| この本はもう読んでしまいました | I've already read this book (start to finish). |
| 電車にかさを忘れてしまいました | I stupidly left my umbrella on the train. |
| コップを落として割ってしまいました | I dropped the glass and broke it. |
Non-past 〜てしまいます
Still one of the two senses, just not yet done: "I'll get it done" or "I'm going to end up …".
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 昼までにレポートを書いてしまいます | I'll have the report written by noon. |
| 急がないと、終電が行ってしまいます | If we don't hurry the last train will go (and leave us). |
In speech てしまう contracts: 〜てしまった → 〜ちゃった, 〜でしまった → 〜じゃった. 忘れちゃった · 飲んじゃった. Understand it; write the full form.
覚えています vs 忘れました
| Japanese | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 覚えています | I remember (state) | never 覚えます for "I remember now" |
| 覚えていません | I don't remember | not 覚えません |
| 忘れました | I forgot | a completed event, so plain past |
| 忘れています | it has slipped my mind | rarer, a lingering state |
The asymmetry is the exam trap: remembering is a state (ています) but forgetting is an event (ました). 忘れています is not the normal way to say "I forgot".
