Lesson 45 — 場合は · のに (逆接)
L45 · 場合は · のに (although)
REF場合は · のに (逆接)
1. 〜場合は — in the case that
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | plain form | 時間に間に合わない場合は、連絡してください |
| い-adj | 〜い | 具合が悪い場合は、休んでください |
| な-adj | 〜な | 必要な場合は、お知らせください |
| noun | 〜の | 火事の場合は、エレベーターを使わないでください |
More formal than たら — the natural choice in rules, manuals, contracts, and public notices.
Note the な-adj/noun forms: な / の — same as とき (L23).
2. 〜のに — although / even though
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | plain | 約束をしたのに、彼は来ませんでした |
| い-adj | 〜い | 安いのに、だれも買いません |
| な-adj | 〜な | 便利なのに、使いません |
| noun | 〜な | 日曜日なのに、働きます |
のに carries emotion — surprise, dissatisfaction, complaint, or disappointment. が and けど are neutral alternatives.
Because of that, のに cannot be followed by a request, invitation, or command.
3. のに vs が / ても
| Form | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜が / けど | neutral contrast | 安いですが、買いません |
| 〜のに | contrast + dissatisfaction | 安いのに、買いません |
| 〜ても | hypothetical "even if" | 安くても、買いません |
のに describes something that actually happened; ても is hypothetical.
4. The two のに — disambiguation
| L42 (use) | L45 (although) | |
|---|---|---|
| form | dict verb + のに | plain form + のに |
| な-adj | n/a | 便利なのに |
| follows | 使う · いる ·便利· かかる | any clause |
Set expressions会話
〜場合は、〜てください。
保証書をお持ちですか。
修理をお願いしたいんですが。
申し訳ありません。
〜のに、まだ届きません。
Key vocabulary
詳説 In depth — grammar notes
1. 〜場合は — in the event that
場合 is a noun ("case"), so everything in front of it takes the shape a noun modifier takes (L22).
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | plain | 遅れる場合は · 来られない場合は |
| い-adj | plain | 都合が悪い場合は |
| な-adj | + な | 必要な場合は |
| noun | + の | 火事の場合は · 病気の場合は |
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 遅れる場合は、必ず連絡してください | If you're going to be late, be sure to get in touch. |
| 領収書が必要な場合は、係の者にお申し出ください | If you need a receipt, please tell a member of staff. |
| 故障の場合は、この番号に電話してください | In case of a breakdown, call this number. |
| 紙が出ない場合は、ここを押してください | If no paper comes out, press here. |
場合 is the register of manuals, notices and rules. In conversation 〜たら says the same thing more naturally: 遅れたら、電話してください.
2. 〜のに — although, and I'm not happy about it
Plain form + のに. な-adjectives and nouns take な. The sentence carries surprise, disappointment or complaint — it is never neutral.
| Type | Before のに |
|---|---|
| verb | 勉強したのに · 行くのに |
| い-adj | 安いのに |
| な-adj | + な: 便利なのに |
| noun | + な: 日曜日なのに |
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| たくさん勉強したのに、試験に落ちました | I studied hard, and still I failed the exam. |
| 約束したのに、彼は来ませんでした | He promised, yet he didn't come. |
| 日曜日なのに、働かなければなりません | It's Sunday and I still have to work. |
| まだ4月なのに、暑いですね | It's only April and it's already hot. |
The second clause cannot be a request, an invitation or a command — のに only reports a situation that has already disappointed you. 寒いのに、窓を閉めてください ✕ → 寒いから、窓を閉めてください ○.
3. のに vs が vs ても
| Form | Feeling | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜が | plain contrast, no emotion | 勉強しましたが、落ちました |
| 〜のに | contrast + "that's not fair / I'm surprised" | 勉強したのに、落ちました |
| 〜ても | even if — including hypotheticals | 勉強しても、落ちるでしょう |
| Japanese | Reads as |
|---|---|
| 薬を飲みましたが、治りません | I took the medicine but I'm not better. |
| 薬を飲んだのに、治りません | I took the medicine — and I'm *still* not better. |
| 薬を飲んでも、治りません | Even taking medicine doesn't fix it. |
4. The two のに — how to tell them apart
| purpose のに (L42) | concessive のに (L45) | |
|---|---|---|
| before it | dictionary form only | any plain form, past included |
| after it | 使う · 便利 · かかる · いる | a full clause |
| な-adj / noun | not allowed | 便利なのに · 雨なのに |
| example | この道具は開けるのに使います | 新しいのに、もう壊れました |
Quick test: if a past tense or an adjective sits in front of のに, it is "although". If a dictionary-form verb sits in front and a word like 使う or 便利 follows, it is "for".
Error table
| ✕ | ○ | Why |

| 高いのに、買ってください | 高いですが、買ってください | no request after のに |
| 勉強したのにでも、落ちました | 勉強したのに、落ちました | のに already means "although" |
