Lesson 26 — んです · ていただけませんか · たらいいですか
L26 · んです
REFんです · ていただけませんか · たらいいですか
1. 〜んです — explanation
Formation: plain form + んです. な-adj and noun take なんです.
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | plain | 行くんです /行ったんです |
| い-adj | plain | 痛いんです |
| な-adj | 〜なんです | 好きなんです |
| noun | 〜なんです | 誕生日なんです |
Written/formal variant: 〜のです. Casual: 〜の / 〜んだ.
2. When to use it
| Function | Example |
|---|---|
| asking about something you observe | どうしたんですか。/元気がないですね、どうしたんですか |
| giving the reason behind a situation | 頭が痛いんです(だから帰ります) |
| adding background to a request | 日本語がわからないんですが… |
Trap: a neutral statement of fact takes plain です/ます. Using んです with no shared context sounds odd or overly dramatic.
Answering a んですか question normally uses んです too: 「どうしたんですか」「ちょっと気分が悪いんです」
3. 〜んですが、… — softening
日本語がわからないんですが、英語で話していただけませんか。
ちょっとお願いがあるんですが…んですが presents the situation, then the request follows. Trailing off after んですが is itself a polite move.
4. 〜ていただけませんか — very polite request
| Form | Politeness |
|---|---|
| 〜てください | neutral instruction |
| 〜てくださいませんか | polite |
| 〜ていただけませんか | most polite |
5. 〜たらいいですか — asking for instructions
どこで切符を買ったらいいですか。
いつ来たらいいですか。
Question word + た-form + らいいですか. The ば version (どうすればいいですか) arrives in L35.
Set expressions会話
どうしたんですか。
実は…
〜んですが、ちょっと教えていただけませんか。
それは いけませんね。
お大事に。
Key vocabulary
詳説 In depth — grammar notes
What んです actually does
んです adds no information. It changes the status of the sentence: instead of announcing a new fact, you present it as connected to something already in the air — something the listener can see, something just said, something you are both standing in.
| Sentence | Reads as |
|---|---|
| 頭が痛いです | neutral report — I have a headache |
| 頭が痛いんです | explanation — (that's why) I have a headache |
| 国へ帰ります | announcement — I'm going home |
| 国へ帰るんです | the reason behind what you noticed |
Grammatically it is the nominaliser の plus です — "it is the case that…". The ん is just の worn down in speech.
Formation — the な trap
| Type | non-past | negative | past |
|---|---|---|---|
| verb | 行くんです | 行かないんです | 行ったんです |
| い-adj | 痛いんです | 痛くないんです | 痛かったんです |
| な-adj | 好きなんです | 好きじゃないんです | 好きだったんです |
| noun | 誕生日なんです | 誕生日じゃないんです | 誕生日だったんです |
Non-past な-adjectives and nouns take な, exactly as they do before any noun — because ん is a noun. 学生だんです ✕ · 学生なんです ○. Past and negative forms are already plain, so they attach directly.
| Register | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| written / formal | 〜のです | 調査が必要なのです |
| spoken polite | 〜んです | 時間がないんです |
| casual statement | 〜んだ ·〜の | 忙しいんだ |
| casual question | 〜の? | どうしたの? |
The four things it is used for
| Function | Trigger | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ask about something you can see | you notice a situation | 元気がないですね。どうしたんですか |
| give the reason behind a situation | you are asked, or you pre-empt | ちょっと気分が悪いんです |
| set up a request | you need something | 日本語がわからないんですが… |
| show you have understood | you just learned it | ああ、そうなんですか |
An んですか question is normally answered with んです. 「どうしたんですか」「財布をなくしたんです」 — matching the form keeps the exchange coherent.
When NOT to use it
This is where most learners overshoot. んです out of nowhere sounds dramatic, nosy, or like an excuse.
| Context | ✕ | ○ |
|---|---|---|
| self-introduction | わたしはミラーなんです | わたしはミラーです |
| plain new information | 明日は雨なんです | 明日は雨です |
| neutral description | これは本なんです | これは本です |
| answering a simple question | 「何時ですか」「3時なんです」 | 「3時です」 |
どうして来なかったんですか is grammatical but demands an explanation — fine from a teacher, pushy between strangers. An んです question always implies "I noticed something and I want the story".
〜んですが… — the softener
Presenting your situation first, then trailing off, is the standard opening move for anything awkward. The listener often answers before you finish.
| Opening | Then |
|---|---|
| 日本語がわからないんですが、 | 英語で話していただけませんか |
| ちょっとお願いがあるんですが、 | 手伝っていただけませんか |
| 頭が痛いんですが、 | 早く帰ってもいいですか |
| 電話が故障しているんですが… | (nothing — the request is understood) |
〜んですけど is the same thing, slightly more casual. Both are "but" in form only; nothing is being contrasted.
The request ladder
All of these mean "please do X". They differ in how much room they leave the other person to say no — and length is a reliable proxy for politeness.
| Form | Level | Say it to |
|---|---|---|
| 〜て | casual | family, close friends |
| 〜てください | neutral instruction | students, customers, anyone equal or below |
| 〜てくれませんか | polite, casual base | friends, colleagues |
| 〜てくださいませんか | polite | someone you don't know well |
| 〜てもらえませんか | polite, humbler | colleagues, shop staff |
| 〜ていただけませんか | most polite of the set | superiors, strangers, formal settings |
| 〜ていただきたいんですが | very formal, indirect | business, written requests |
The machinery: いただけます is the potential of いただきます (humble もらいます), and the question is negative. So you are literally asking "might I not be able to receive…?" — every layer of indirection buys politeness.
〜てください is not the polite ceiling. To a superior it can read as an order; use 〜ていただけませんか instead.
〜たらいいですか — asking to be told what to do
Question word + た-form + らいいですか. You are asking the listener to choose for you.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| どこで切符を買ったらいいですか | あの機械で買ってください |
| いつ来たらいいですか | 9時に来てください |
| 何を持って行ったらいいですか | 何も要りません |
| どうしたらいいですか | 係の人に聞いたらいいですよ |
The ば version — どうすればいいですか — arrives in L35 and is interchangeable here. 〜たらいい is the more conversational of the two.
The three points are one routine
L26 is not three unrelated patterns. It is the anatomy of asking a stranger for help.
すみません、ちょっといいですか。
粗大ごみを出したいんですが…
どこに持って行ったらいいですか。
市の規則を教えていただけませんか。
どうもありがとうございました。助かりました。
Situation with んですが → question with たらいいですか → request with ていただけませんか. Learn the shape once and it transfers to every service counter in Japan.
