Lesson 23 — とき · と (条件) ·道の案内(directions)
L23 · とき · と
REFとき · と (条件) ·道の案内(directions)
1. 〜とき — when
| Before とき | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | plain form | 図書館で本を借りるとき、カードが要ります |
| い-adj | 〜い | 眠いとき、コーヒーを飲みます |
| な-adj | 〜な | 暇なとき、遊びに来てください |
| noun | 〜の | 子どものとき、よく川で泳ぎました |
Tense before とき is RELATIVE
| Form | Timing | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 帰るとき | action not yet complete | 国へ帰るとき、かばんを買いました bought it before/while travelling |
| 帰ったとき | action complete | 国へ帰ったとき、かばんを買いました bought it after arriving |
The tense of the とき-clause is judged against the main verb, not against now. This is the most-tested point in L23.
2. 〜と — natural / automatic consequence
Formation: dictionary form + と (negative: ない + と)
このボタンを押すと、お釣りが出ます。
右へ曲がると、郵便局があります。
春になると、桜が咲きます。
Restriction: the main clause cannot express will — no requests, invitations, commands, or intentions.
雨が降ると、行きましょう ✕ → use たら (L25).
Typical と contexts
| machine operation | つまみを回すと、音が大きくなります |
| directions | まっすぐ行くと、駅があります |
| natural law | 春になると、暖かくなります |
3. 道の案内— GIVING & ASKING DIRECTIONS
Movement verbs and their particles
| Verb | Particle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 曲がります | を … へ/に | 角を右へ曲がります |
| 渡ります | を | 橋を渡ります |
| 通ります | を | 公園を通ります |
| 歩きます | を | 道を歩きます |
| 越えます | を | 橋を越えます |
Key point: these verbs of passage take を for the route — not で. 道を歩きます ○ /道で歩きます ✕
This を marks the space moved through, and appears again in 出ます (部屋を出ます) and 降ります (電車を降ります).
Landmark vocabulary
Ordinal counters — 〜目
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜つ目 | the Nth (general) | 2つ目の角— the second corner |
| 〜番目 | the Nth (in order) | 3番目のビル |
| 〜本目 | the Nth street | 1本目の道 |
目 turns a count into an ordinal: 2つ = two things · 2つ目 = the second one.
Direction phrases
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| まっすぐ行ってください | go straight |
| 2つ目の交差点を右へ曲がってください | turn right at the second intersection |
| 信号を渡ってください | cross at the light |
| 橋を渡ると、左にあります | cross the bridge and it's on the left |
| 突き当たりを左です | left at the end of the road |
| 〜はこの道の右側にあります | it's on the right side of this road |
Asking the way会話
すみません、〜はどこですか。

この道をまっすぐ行ってください。
歩いてどのくらいかかりますか。— 10分ぐらいです。
どうもありがとうございました。
Key vocabulary
詳説 In depth — grammar notes
とき is a noun, and that explains everything
とき means 'time / occasion'. It is an ordinary noun, so whatever sits in front of it is plain L22 noun modification — the connection rules are not new, they are the same table you already learned.
| Before とき | Because… | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb, plain form | verbs modify nouns bare | 図書館で本を借りるとき |
| い-adj 〜い | い-adjectives modify nouns bare | 眠いとき |
| な-adj 〜な | な-adjectives take な before a noun | 暇なとき |
| noun 〜の | noun + noun takes の | 子どものとき |
| negative 〜ない | plain negative modifies too | 分からないとき、先生に聞きます |
子どもだとき ✕ · 暇だとき ✕ — だ never survives in front of a noun.
Relative tense — the point examiners love
The とき-clause is not tensed against now. It is tensed against the main verb: 〜るとき = the clause action is not yet finished at the moment of the main action; 〜たとき = it is already finished.
| Sentence | Order of events | English |
|---|---|---|
| 国へ帰るとき、かばんを買いました | buy → then travel home | I bought a bag on my way home (still abroad) |
| 国へ帰ったとき、かばんを買いました | arrive home → then buy | I bought a bag after I got home |
| 出かけるとき、かぎをかけます | lock → then leave | I lock up when I go out |
| うちへ帰ったとき、「ただいま」と言います | arrive → then speak | I say tadaima when I get home |
Both halves can be past, non-past, or mixed: the とき-clause form never changes to match the main clause's tense. 日本へ来るとき、成田で友達に会いました — the main verb is past, the clause is still 来る.
With state words (若いとき ·学生のとき ·暇なとき) the distinction disappears — a state has no completion point, so the non-past form is used regardless of when it happened.
Particles after とき
| Form | Effect | Example |
|---|---|---|
| とき | plain, neutral | 寒いとき、コーヒーを飲みます |
| ときは | topic / contrast with other occasions | 雨のときは、タクシーで行きます |
| ときに | pins a single specific moment | 国を出るときに、写真を撮りました |
| ときも | 'also when…' | 暇なときも勉強します |
| ときの | modifies a following noun | 学生のときの写真です |
〜と — the automatic consequence
Dictionary form + と (negative: ない + と). It says: whenever A happens, B follows — no choice, no decision, no exceptions.
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| machine / operation | このボタンを押すと、お釣りが出ます |
| natural law | 春になると、桜が咲きます |
| route / directions | 右へ曲がると、郵便局があります |
| habit | 朝になると、頭が痛くなります |
| negative condition | お金を入れないと、動きません |
The と-clause is always non-past, even when the whole sentence is about the past: 子どものとき、夏になると、川で泳ぎました ○ · 夏になったと ✕.
What may NOT follow と
The main clause has to be something that simply happens. Anything the speaker chooses is blocked.
| Blocked in the main clause | ✕ | Fix with たら (L25) |
|---|---|---|
| intention / volition | 雨が降ると、行きません | 雨が降ったら、行きません |
| request | 駅に着くと、電話してください | 駅に着いたら、電話してください |
| invitation | 暇になると、行きましょう | 暇になったら、行きましょう |
| command / prohibition | 安いと、買いなさい | 安かったら、買いなさい |
| permission | 終わると、帰ってもいいです | 終わったら、帰ってもいいです |
One past main clause is allowed: discovery. 窓を開けると、海が見えました — 'when I opened the window, (I found) the sea was visible'. Nothing was decided; the result simply presented itself.
と vs たら vs ば vs なら — the map
You meet these across four lessons. Filed together they are much easier to keep apart.
| Form | Lesson | Core meaning | Volitional main clause? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 〜と | L23 | automatic, always-true result | ✕ |
| 〜たら | L25 | if / when — the general-purpose one | ○ |
| 〜ば | L35 | if — conditional focus, often written | △ (limited) |
| 〜なら | L35 | if we're talking about X, then… | ○ |
When unsure in conversation, たら is almost never wrong. と is the one with the hard restriction.
The を of passage
Verbs of moving through a space mark that space with を — not で and not に. This is a different を from the object marker; nothing is being acted on, it is a route being traversed.
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 渡ります | cross | 橋を渡ります |
| 通ります | pass through | 公園を通ります |
| 歩きます | walk along | 道を歩きます |
| 散歩します | stroll through | 公園を散歩します |
| 曲がります | turn at | 角を曲がります |
| 出ます | leave (a space) | 部屋を出ます |
| 降ります | get off | 電車を降ります |
道で歩きます ✕ — で marks where an activity takes place, but walking is the movement itself. 公園で遊びます ○ (playing happens there) vs 公園を散歩します ○ (you move across it).
曲がります takes two particles at once
角を右へ曲がってください。 — を marks where you turn, へ (or に) marks which way.
| Piece | Particle | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| 角·信号·交差点 | を | at what landmark |
| 右·左 | へ / に | in which direction |
Either half can be dropped: 右へ曲がってください · 次の角を曲がってください.
Ordinals with 〜目
目 turns any counter into a ranking, and the result then links to its noun with の.
| Counter | Count | Ordinal | With a noun |
|---|---|---|---|
| 〜つ | 2つ — two | 2つ目— the second | 2つ目の角 |
| 〜番 | 3番— number 3 | 3番目— the third | 3番目のビル |
| 〜本 | 1本— one (long thing) | 1本目— the first | 1本目の道 |
| 〜駅 | 2駅— two stations | 2駅目— the second stop | 2駅目で降ります |
Don't drop the の: 2つ目角 ✕ → 2つ目の角 ○.
Location words that are easy to mix up
| Word | Use it when… | Example |
|---|---|---|
| となり | same category, immediately beside | 銀行のとなりの建物 |
| そば | physically close, any category | 駅のそばです |
| 近く | in the general vicinity | この近くにコンビニがあります |
| 向こう | on the far side of something | 橋の向こうです |
| 突き当たり | at the dead end of a corridor / street | 突き当たりを左です |
| 右側·左側 | which side of a road | この道の右側にあります |
Giving directions as a routine
Real directions are a chain of と-clauses ending in あります or 〜てください.
すみません、郵便局へ行きたいんですが、どう行ったらいいですか。
この道をまっすぐ行ってください。
2つ目の交差点を右へ曲がると、左側にあります。
歩いてどのくらいかかりますか。
10分ぐらいです。
どう行ったらいいですか is L26 grammar arriving early — it is the standard way to ask, so learn it as a fixed phrase now.
要ります and friends
| Verb | Particle | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 要ります | が | 'is needed'. No ています form: 要っています ✕ |
| 動きます | が | intransitive — the machine moves by itself |
| 故障します | が | usually seen as 故障しています — it is broken |
| 触ります | に | ドアに触ります — not を |
