Dictionary form (辞書形) from ます-form

Verbs whose stem ends in an i-sound can be either group — 帰ります (G1) vs 起きます (G2) look alike. Learn the group with the verb.

わたしは日本語ができます。 (ability)

予約ができます。/駅前に大きいスーパーができました。 (comes into being)
2. V dict + ことができます
ミラーさんは漢字を読むことができます。
ここで車を止めることができます。Covers both personal ability and circumstantial possibility. L27's potential form is the shorter equivalent.
3. わたしの趣味は 〜こと です
わたしの趣味は音楽を聞くことです。
A verb needs こと to work as a noun. 趣味は音楽を聞くです ✕
4. 〜まえに — before

Key rule: always dictionary form before まえに, even when the whole sentence is past tense: 日本へ来るまえに、日本語を勉強しました。
Compare 〜たあとで (L34), which always takes た-form. These two are frequently tested together.
