今日のポイント
purpose (non-volitional)
The ように-clause takes a verb you cannot simply decide to do.
| Verb type before ように | Example |
|---|---|
| potential form | 日本語が話せるように、毎日練習しています |
| intransitive verb | よく聞こえるように、大きい声で話します |
| ない-form | 忘れないように、メモします |
purpose (non-volitional)
The key contrast with ために (L42):
ように — potential / intransitive / ない (things you can't will directly)
ために — volitional verbs (things you decide to do)
Also: ように allows different subjects in the two clauses; ために requires the same subject.
change in ability or habit
日本語が話せるようになりました。
野菜が食べられるようになりました。
毎朝走るようになりました。
Use 〜なくなりました, not ないようになりました:
たばこを吸わなくなりました。 — stopped smoking
漢字が読めなくなりました。 — lost the ability
making an effort
| Form | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜ようにします | deciding now / a resolution | これから毎日運動するようにします |
| 〜ようにしています | a habit already maintained | 毎日運動するようにしています |
甘い物を食べないようにしています。
忘れないようにしてください。 — please make sure not to forget.
